Dr. Atul K. Madan is an internationally recognized authority in laparoscopic and bariatric surgery, with board certification and over a decade of dedicated experience in the field. His career began in Memphis, where he made history by performing the city’s first laparoscopic gastric bypass. He later served as Chief of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Section at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and performed the world’s first laparoscopic gastric bypass in a liver transplant patient. Dr. Madan also pioneered, directed, and secured funding for the Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery Fellowship.

Dr. Madan’s contributions to the field include over 175 published articles and more than 3,000 laparoscopic gastric bypass procedures. His expertise extends to revisional bariatric surgeries, and he was among the first to offer endoscopic treatments for weight regain after gastric bypass. As Chief of the Laparoendoscopic and Bariatric Surgery Division and Director of the Center of Excellence for Laparoscopic and Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of Miami, he continued to lead advancements in the field, including the establishment of a funded Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery Fellowship.

A member of key laparoscopic and bariatric societies such as the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, and Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, Dr. Madan has been recognized for his national expertise through various committee appointments. He has received numerous accolades, including the SAGES Young Investigator Award, with his work being honored at prestigious international conferences.

Dr. Madan is an expert not only in bariatric surgery but also in laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, and laparoscopic revisional bariatric surgery for patients experiencing complications from previous surgeries. He has authored multiple book chapters, including a video guide on laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, and has shared his knowledge globally through lectures in the United States, Mexico, South America, India, Europe, Australia, and Japan.
